Parties pop off anywhere nowadays. When they do, it’s best to have two of the most versatile DJs you can find to turn loose on the decks. Introducing Pump and Hedspin.
Brothers from some parallel reality, Pump of Calgary and Hedspin of Vancouver were likely drawn together by their shared Filipino-Canadian heritage, extreme amounts of time spent on the Internet and affinity for practical jokes – often on each other. But it’s their uniform excellence in the art of professional party-starting that permanently forged their bond. Why rock solo when you can swap cuts with your musical equal?

The lucky crowd at a Pump and Hedspin jam is the biggest winner in this arrangement, however, with partygoers potentially receiving twice the hip hop, jazz, funk, soul, disco, house, electro, rock, original edits, aggressive mixes, dynamic cuts, exhilarating back-and-forth interplay and massive payoffs they might have been ready for, but loving it nonetheless. Because to witness one of Hedspin and Pump’s sets played basically by ear, their intuitiveness and inventiveness on display for all to enjoy, is truly a treasured experience.

So whether it’s somewhere hot (like MTV Spring Break in the Caribbean) or cold (like Vancity during the 2010 Winter Games), in the middle of heated battle (Hedspin is the reigning world Red Bull 3Style king, Pump a past DMC and ITF champ) or somewhere in between – Rock The Bells, The Rub (NYC), LAX (Las Vegas), WMC (Miami), The Summer X Games (L.A.), SXSW (Austin) and CMW (Toronto) – it should be no surprise to find Pump and Hedspin mashing it up, joking around and blowing minds. Be sure to catch them together, solo or with one or more of their EH! Team brethren in 2012 – your ears will thank you.

SMALLTOWN DJS: If your ears work, you can’t not have fun at a Smalltown DJs gig. That’s a scientific fact. Look it up. The Canadian duo’s uncanny ability to make crowds feel like schoolkids at recess stems naturally from their focus on maximizing fun for themselves.

‘We’re just out to consistently have the best time possible,’ says Pete Emes, who shares space behind the decks with partner Mike Grimes. This fun maximization philosophy is the unifying force be-hind the Smalltown’s genre-warping club sets, which tend to cover vast musical territory but never veer from the good times vibe.

In their focus on music as a means of letting loose and having fun, Smalltown DJs are like the KISS of dance music. Actually, KISS are too theatrical. They’re more like AC/DC. Meets Raffi. At a water-slide park. With a lot (a LOT) of beer.

TELEPHONED was born one night in Brooklyn when DJ/producer Sammy Bananas and singer/party starter Maggie Horn decided to record their own version of T-Pain’s “Can’t Believe It.” Their track was neither remix nor cover – instead, the duo fashioned a postmodern take on both, warping the original beat into a hypnotic club track and bringing out the dreamy qualities only hinted at in Pain’s auto-tuned melodies. Sammy and Maggie’s fresh “Can’t Believe It” quickly became a DJ favorite – even making it into mix rotation on LA hip-hop station Power 106! – so they decided to keep recording as a team, cleverly named after the kids game of Telephone: no faithful copies, just a party line of unexpected twists.

Over the past two years, the duo have expanded the concept as they continue to churn out instantly addictive and massively charming covers, create genre-bashing mixtapes and perform their non-stop whirlwind live show on stages across the world. To promote the release of their self titled EP on Fool’s Gold in Winter ’10, Telephoned compiled a mix modeled in the tradition of rap street tapes. On “Off The Hook” Bananas selects recognizable instrumentals from dance and hip-hop while Horn sings other songs on top of them, a combination the group christen the “cover-up”.

Telephoned’s energetic, mixtape-dance-party of a live show got the attention of prestigious website Pitchfork, who called their performance in Austin,TX “the most fun thing at SXSW.” Electro-revivalists Chromeo caught wind of the act, inviting the duo to join them on their “Business Casual” tour this August, making stops in over 20 cities while performing to packed venues across the US and Canada. Bananas and Horn released their second mixtape “Keep Their Heads Ringin” just before hitting the road, and reveled in handing CDs out for free to fans after performing each night.

The pair are poised to further expand the scope of Telephoned with their forthcoming 7″ and digital release on Scion A/V in late November. “Hold Me” is the first entirely original song born out of the collaboration, but their mission statement hasn’t changed considering the fact they chose to cover themselves for the b-side of the record, “Telephoning” the original uptempo funky track into a smoothed out alt-country tune. Telephoned survives off of transforming and mutating songs through their own lens, and thats the only rule to play the game.

KUTCORNERS is leaving Vancouver indefinately as he scooped a nice little job at Serato in New Zealand. Come wish him luck in his new future and also see him and Marvel perform their ‘live’ set for the 1st time ever!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY APOSTROPHE EIRE (FORTUNE SOUND)

ELECTRIC PUNANNY: Over 3 years ago, an enterprising Jasmine Solano and Melo-X, had the idea of pooling together their respective loves of reggae, hip-hop, and electronic music to form what would be titled Electric Punanny. Within the sweaty walls of NYC’s SWAY nightclub, Electric Punanny would grow to become one of NYC’s most popular monthly parties. Jasmine and Melo (each respected selectors and emcee’s in their own rights) enlisted the accomplished nightlife promoter Roxy Cottontail, and photographer TONE, to capture not only the visuals, but the mood and energy of each bash. Those who would become regulars of “EP” came to love and appreciate the diverse mix of characters, the perspiration inducing sounds, and just the right amount of raunch to keep everyone thirsting for more. What started out as a series of parties had come to represent a cross section of NYC’s downtown youth, indie, & street cultures, as well as a venue where creativity and true art in music would coalesce.

Followers of Electric Punanny have been treated over the years, to guest DJ’s and performers, including Chuck Inglish (The Cool Kids), Million $ Mano, Hollywood Holt, Theophilus London, Mickey Factz, Christian Rich, and Scotty B. Artists like Diplo, Maluca, Joell Ortiz, Kid Cudi, Murs, Ninja-Sonik, D-Nice, Curtains, and pro BMX rider, Nigel Sylvester among others, could be spotted taking in the festivities on any given night. With such a winning template, it only makes sense that Electric Punanny would extend this energy and try to translate it in other locales. would extend this energy and try to translate it in other locales. In April 2010, EP set off to Denver in its first out of town effort, where over 300 willing party goers took their licks at the underground art gallery, Guerilla Garden. Since Electric Punanny has traveled to other cities in the US and abroad. Making appearances at Denver’s Beauty Bar and Chez Moune in Paris.

IN THE LIVESTOCK ROOM WITH RICKY MARS

Ninjasonik’s music speaks for itself and while not defined to one genre it has the ability to perhaps be just punk, just hip-hop and just pop. Derived from the not-so subtle title “hipster-sonic”, a comic reference to the lifestyle of Brooklyn’s innovative DIY musicians, the name Ninjasonik reveals more of the group’s vision and musical taste’s than they suspect.

‘Ninja’, a covert agent skilled in infiltration and speedy assassination refers to the group’s ability to skillfully override your initial perception of all things pop, punk and hip-hop. “Sonik” the exotic booming sound created by supersonic flight refers to the musical magnitude of Ninajasonik’s stylistic approach to the punk and hip-hop inspirations of Slick Rick and the Sex Pistols. Together an amalgam of harsh, fast beats, lyrically laden flows and an attitude so Brooklyn and so defiant make Ninjasonik a flavorful insertion into music’s clichéd recipe.

Ninjasonik are at the helm of a noisy cultural revolution and well on their way to becoming the voice for this new musical generation. They will as the group’s front man, Telli, states, “change the face of music…forever.” Ninjasonik’s method of fusing the old, the new and the esoteric to energize, excite, and connect with their audiences sees them, not only solely producing music, but creating a lifestyle where everyone can claim the right to be who they are, wherever they are, for as long as they want. Where taking risks stimulates creativity, where creativity breeds innovation and where innovation effects change. This is the Ninjasonik formula.

DAM FUNK: Known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk,” Dam-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.

As a DJ/selector, Dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.

The next phase of the Ambassador’s mission is his debut album Toeachizown: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today’s scene with Dãm’s own original “Modern-Funk” compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records’ like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought Dãm on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It’s a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk.
