SOUTH RAKKAS CREW: Diplo and ‘N Sync? Deerhoof and Elephant Man? Tricky and Michael Jackson? M.I.A and Thom Yorke? Just one name links up this diverse, groundbreaking posse: forget Kevin Bacon—when it comes to six degrees of the most cutting-edge music production out there, there’s only South Rakkas Crew.

Rugged dancehall, shameless pop, hipster electro bangers, rude dubstep—fuck it, South Rakkas does it all. A duo comprised of Alex Greggs and Dennis “D-Rakkas” Shaw, South Rakkas took an unusual path to become the dons of today’s digital funk. South Rakkas first gained fame for their blazing dancehall riddims (“Clappas,” “Red Alert,” “Bionic Ras,” “Chinkuzi” anyone?), which brought production work for stars like Mr. Vegas and Elephant Man. But it’s not for nothing that XLR8R recently praised South Rakkas for their “boundary-pushing” powers; indeed, these futuristic rhythm killers can’t be held down to any one sound or style. SRC can flex from Beenie Man and Bounty Killer one moment, T-Pain the next, and then on to the likes of M.I.A., Lily Allen, Beck, Duran Duran, Justin Timberlake, The Bug, Warrior Queen, Britney Spears, Shakira and Yo Majesty—all of whom have been touched by South Rakkas’ edgy studio savvy. Those skills came about when Greggs and Shaw met up working at the same recording studio. Both had roots in the local hip-hop/reggae scene: Greggs created beats for local rap groups and, erm, Barenaked Ladies, while Shaw spent a misspent youth as charismatic, party-starting DJ (“Rakkas” is in fact a local West Indian slang term for “rockers” reggae music that Shaw used to put on his DJ flyers to indicate his parties’ music policy). The concept for SRC first hatched, though, when Greggs and Shaw moved to Orlando, Florida to become a crucial part of ‘N Sync’s production team. There, the pair decided South Rakkas Crew, would combine both their strengths. The plan was simple: Greggs would hold down the pop/dance production side in Florida (his work with the archetypal boy band on smash albums like Pop would catapult him into the pantheon of platinum-plated star producer/mixer/remixers); Shaw, meanwhile, would travel to ruffneck Kingston, Jamaica, where an introduction from his brother-in-law Mr. Vegas gave him access to dancehall’s top talent. Rakkas’ first riddim, “Clappas,” quickly proved a major island smash, paving the way for many more; Jamaican and non-Jamaican audiences alike also appreciated SRC’s talent for fusing hook-laden song structure with sound-system destroying beats.

This unique combo of hit-making production and arrangement with hard-hitting dancehall sonics set the stage for SRC’s inevitable global takeover. While South Rakkas keeps a foot in the pop game—Greggs was working with Michael Jackson on new material before the King of Pop died, and recently remixed the likes of BeyoncÈ, Kelis and LMFAO—they’ve also been acclaimed by the underground and critics alike. When beat king Diplo put out South Rakkas’ Mad Again and The Mix Up eps………

HARVEY HARVEY

HUNTER EVEN

DJ AYRES: Originally from Mississippi, DJ Ayres or Ayres Haxton Jr. as his parents know him, is famous for being the founding father of The Rub, the Brooklyn monthly party that swiftly gained a reputation for being “The Best Party in NYC” (New York Press) back in 2002 and to this day remains one of the staples of NYC nightlife. Combining everything from 80′s pop and disco to house, reggae and hip-hop, The Rub provides “something for everyone, no matter what you’re into,” (resident Cosmo Baker) and in the process helped launch DJ Ayres into worldwide consciousness as one of the best mixtape-making, party djas around.

Growing up on a diet of Delta Blues, Miami Bass, alternative rock and hip-hop, Dj Ayres paid dues in the upstate New York town of Poughkeepsie (along with the likes of Mark Ronson and Darshan Jesrani of Metro Area), where he divided his time between scratching in dorm rooms, hosting radio shows, djing at local bars, promoting shows and fulfilling his insatiable appetite for indie hip-hop singles and mixtapes – a pedigree that has now seen Ayres go on to dj in over 60 cities across the globe with the likes of Ghostface Killah, Public Enemy, The Chemical Brothers, Snoop Dogg, DJ AM, Z-Trip, Diplo, Santogold, Spank Rock, LCD Soundsystem, Justice and countless more.

Further cementing his status as a key player in American club culture is the fact that Ayres has released over 20 remixes, both on his own T&A label (with partner Tittsworth) plus Money Studies, GAMM, ESL, Scion A/V and more. Ayres produced and released more than 40 mix CDs in the last five years, prompting The New York Times to hail him as”one of New York’s best mixtape DJs.” He cohosts two online radio shows with The Rub, and continues to play at fundraisers for Barak Obama, Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Families of 911, Tsunami & Katrina survivors and more.

CO-OP & HUNNICUTT

With their unique blends of hip hop, funk, electro, rock, reggae and anything else that gets bodies moving, the dynamic duo of DJ Co-op and DJ Hunnicutt have been ruling the dance party scene in Winnipeg for nearly a decade. Together they have thrown dozens and dozens of parties at clubs (Doin’ the Do!, Get on the Good Foot!) on riverboats (That’s the Funky Ship!, The Funk Boat) roller rinks (A Roller Skating Jam Named “Saturdays”, Bounce Rock Skate Roll) and even ice skating rinks (Soul On Ice), all the while making each party unique, and challenging themselves to out-do the last.

The winning formula? Well, this turntable tandem not only has the skills (and the records) to make the dance floor elite go wild, they also have the knack for packing them in, too. From witty press releases and quirky radio and internet commercials, to imaginative theme parties and unforgettable posters and flyers, these showmen and shameless self-promoters make sure that everyone knows where to be on the night of their party.

And the hard work has paid off – the duo has been voted Winnipeg’s best DJs by the readers of Uptown Magazine every year since 2002.

Co-op and Hunnicutt’s creativity has earned them an international reputation, and as a result they have joined a global network of like-minded party-rockin’ DJs. The duo has hosted an impressive collection of special guests over the years, including A-Trak, The Rub, Smalltown DJs, Certified Bananas, Skratch Bastid, Stretch Armstrong, DJ Day, DJ Nu-mark, Buck 65 and Shout Out Out Out Out.

Lately, Co-op and Hunnicutt been expanding their reach to the rest of Canada and beyond. The boys have been featured multiple times on Much Music and CBC Radio, and they’ve rocked crowds in Minneapolis, Chicago, SXSW in Austin, Pop! Montreal and at The Rub - one of New York City’s hottest monthly parties.

DJ Hunnicutt has been DJing since 1991, both in the clubs and as a member of the Winnipeg instrumental outfit, the Hummers. As a member of Farm Fresh, Hunnicutt is also a co-founder of the acclaimed Canadian hip hop label Peanuts & Corn Records. Currently, he is the DJ for all of the acts on the Peanuts & Corn roster, including rappers mcenroe, Pip Skid, John Smith, Birdapres, Gruf and Yy. Since 1994, Hunnicutt has appeared as a performer or producer on over 40 albums, recording with artists as diverse as the Rheostatics and Mood Ruff. He’s hosted Born in the Break, a weekly radio program on UMFM, since 1998 and if that wasn’t enough, he also DJs for the internationally acclaimed improv comedy duo Crumbs, playing to sold-out theatres in Europe.

With ten years of experience under his belt, DJ Co-op likes to think of himself as Winnipeg’s most versatile DJ. From the early days of throwing underground hip hop nights and dance parties, to earning a spot in the 2005 Canadian DMC battle finals. His fresh and intelligent mixes have blown up Canadian campus radio charts, and gotten love online from several taste-making sites including discobelle.net. Most recently Co-op has been found backing up Epitaph/Big Dada rapper Cadence Weapon and Foultone/Marathon of Dope MC Pip Skid. He’s also incredibly good at pinball.
