Every finished piece tells a story, but its creation begins long before the final result takes shape. It’s in the patience to understand a material, the precision of every cut, and the repetition required to get things right. For Keillor MacLeod, founder and creative behind A1 Studio, craftsmanship is built through hours of focus and physical effort, often in the moments no one sees. It’s a commitment to the process, knowing that good work takes more than skill. It takes the discipline to keep going, and the time to step back, reset, and return ready to do it again.
This is a familiar process in the fashion industry, specifically, how the design process feeds into complementing the lifestyle of the user. Meticulous formulation, rigorous testing, calculated material selection, and immeasurable repetition are only some of the ingredients to develop the perfect product for the intended function. Arc’teryx has done just that with the newly introduced Postour Boot, composed with the pure intention of facilitating recovery, while simultaneously presenting a never before seen 2-in-1 boot/mule solution to the fashion and outdoor industries.
We sat down with Keillor Macleod from A1 STUDIO to learn more about his practice, the rhythm of his working day, and how his world collides with the latest Postour Boot from Arc’teryx.
Can you tell us about A1 studio and how that all came about, as well as the branding in general?
KM: Sure, yeah. I think the whole project was inspired by the kind of industrial nature of Vancouver. I think it's a part of it that's not really seen that much, but it's a part that I really like. And so, A1 is kind of inspired and taken from all the companies that are called A1, like A1 plumbing, A1 framing, it's just kind of like a non-brand, and putting that with the studio just kind of shows what it is. It's inspired by industry and built around that part of the city.
How has working in a studio space changed your creative process?
It allows me to experiment a lot more. I try to have my studio spaces sort of reflect the work that comes out of them. I like the space to feel functional and feel pleasant to be in. I think that sort of translates into the work itself. I think being able to make the work in a place that feels like it fits with the pieces is a big part of the process, and they sort of feed into each other that way.
What's your go-to uniform when you're in the studio?
I typically like hard wearing clothes that are durable, breathable, and comfortable. Sometimes the studio can be quite cold, so things that are performance-based are pretty important to me. Layers. Nothing too flimsy. I typically like durable pants and a t-shirt and then something to keep me warm on top. I wear the Bird Hat from Arc’teryx all the time. It keeps the hair out of my face and keeps my head warm.
What does recovery look like for you after a long day?
I think of it more as a physical thing because, often it's counteracting the physical damage that my body can take doing a physical labour job. So, it's important for me to take care of my body when I’m doing this type of work, 'cause it doesn't necessarily have the longest lifespan if you don't take care of yourself.
For a craftsman, the work extends beyond the workshop. It’s found in the routines that shape each day, the environments that influence the process, and the moments spent stepping away before returning to the task at hand. From the focus required to create something by hand to the transition between indoor work and the outdoors, each part plays a role in sustaining the craft.
The Postour Boot marks a new chapter of footwear, where experimental fashion-forward design meets modern functionality. The distinctively oversized silhouette is kitted with a waterproof GORE-TEX exterior, while underfoot, a Vibram Arctic Grip outsole provides amplified traction and durability. The 2-in-1 design of the Postour allows for versatile utility, aligning with the fast-paced lifestyle of the craftsman, the athlete, and the everyday user who simply seeks more out of their footwear.
